International Songwriting Competition Announces AAA/Roots/Americana Winners

For Immediate Release, February 10, 2004...The International Songwriting Competition (ISC) is very pleased to announce its winners for the 2003 annual competition. Called "the songwriting competition to take note of" by the New York Times, ISC received over 11,000 entries from 60 countries in its sophomore year. ISC prizes include more than $100,000 (USD) in cash and merchandise and are shared by 68 winners in 13 categories.

ISC was thrilled to add a AAA/Roots/Americana category in 2003. ISC is the only major songwriting competition that is dedicated to recognizing songwriters whose music falls within these genres.

Winning First Place in this category is Texas alt country musician Doug Burr for his song "Dark As the Night". Doug has spent the past three years gigging heavily in the Dallas music scene, fronting the up-and-coming roots rock band, The Lonelies. Doug describes his music as rugged, haunting, roots-inspired gospel. "The public response to Doug Burr winning this category has been overwhelmingly positive, and the influx of emails praising his song has been significant," states Candace Avery, Founder/Director of ISC. "Doug is a great songwriter who will set high standards for years to come."

Taking Second Place honors are Toronto, Canada songwriters/musicians Alison MacLean and Stella Panacci for their song "Tennessee". Alison is the former member of the Canadian band MAdE and Stella is a Toronto-based singer, formerly of the band Kat Rocket. This is not the first time the song "Tennessee" has won a songwriting competition; in fact, it won two Canadian songwriting competitions in the past year, garnering a lot of attention from Canadian press and radio.
